Cairncroft has an idyllic location. It is set in one acre of land in the crofting village of Altass, near Rosehall, Sutherland.

Altass is set in the hill above the River Oykel, and has inspiring views up the glen to the west, and north-west to Ben More Assynt (3,274 ft), the highest point in the county.
Altass is about ten miles from Lairg and Bonar Bridge, the nearest towns with a variety of shops, a bank, post office, grocers, butchers etc. Closer to home, there is a well-stocked village shop and post office in Rosehall (two miles distant), selling fruit, vegetables, milk, bread, and other groceries. The nearest spermarkets are the Co-op at Tain (twenty miles) and Safeway (Morrisons) at Ullapool (thirty-five miles).
